Acid sulfate weathering occurs when pyrite weathers at the Earth's surface resulting in the formation of large amounts of sulfuric acid. If the acidity exceeds the buffering capacity of the soil, the soil can become extremely acid. To prove this hypothesis, we collected samples from a field that had areas that were completely devoid of. An example of chemical weathering is acid rain.
